Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice)
Indonesia like most of Asian nation is one of the biggest consumers of rice. Rice has always been a big commodity in here, and most of Indonesia’s cuisine is made from them or served with them. The west part of Indonesia including Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Bali and Sulawesi are the biggest rice consumer in the country, the rest usually uses sago or a combination of rice and corn grain.
One of the most common cuisines in Indonesia is Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice), it’s a favorite among all the people in Indonesia whether they belongs to the lower class or upper class society. Originated from China and spread all over Asian nation Nasi Goreng can be found from hi-class restaurants (usually they serve Chinese fried rice), warung PKL (a small place to eat, usually located near the streets),
to peddlers who sells fried rice around the neighborhood. If you’re looking for the authentic Indonesian fried rice (not the Chinese version) you will easily find them in warung PKL or the peddlers. The basic of fried rice is almost the same in every Asian nation, it uses rice, cooking oil (in Indonesia we use palm oil), sweet soy sauce and sour soy sauce. Every region or province in Indonesia has some variety in serving fried rice, the recipe differs in ingredients and serving. The fried rice red color is because of the tomato sauce that is added while cooking.
