Following my other post a few days ago about the flower parade in Tomohon, the festival doesn’t stop right there.

Flower Carpet at Tomohon Flower Festival

The flower carpet is so huge, that it manage to beat the size of the flower carpet shown in Holtifair, Netherlands last year with the size of 50 x 50 meters. MURI the Indonesian Museum of Records suggest to record the flower carpet in Tomohon with the Guiness Book of World Records, so the city of Tomohon will be known better worldwide because of its flower festival and fulfilling Tomohon’s dream of becoming a horticulture tourism spot in Indonesia.

The flowers used for the carpet came from all the flower farmers near Tomohon. The farmer’s harvest that had not been used for the flower parade were bought to form this massive carpet. The government bought the flower with a price of Rp. 400.00 per single flower tree (about US$ 0.05), with a total of Rp 300 million (about US$ 32.000,00 ) were spent by the government. Unfortunately, not all of the flower tree were able to be bought by the government, there are simply too much flower that had been harvested by the local farmers.

Hundreds of volunteer and paid workers were working on this huge carpet, not to mention the cold and rainy weather they had to face one day before the carpet is shown to public. They worked tirelessly to ensure that the flower carpet is ready for the next day. The idea of creating this carpet was not included in the Tomohon Flower Festivals original plan. It was the mayor’s initiative to start creating this flower carpet, because of the so many numbers of unused flowers in the city. Those unused flowers were supposed to be used for decorating the flower caravan.

The site were flocked by tourists coming from regions near Tomohon, some local tourist even came from Papua. International tourist also didn’t want to missed the chance of viewing this spectacular sight and the festivity this city is having. This flower carpet marked the end of Tomohon Flower Festivals.
